Windows™ Vista
Windows™ Vista is the new, exciting operating system from Microsoft™.
Many new features are included with Vista depending on which version
you are using. However, please use caution before running out
and buying this new "top of the line" OS. So far, we
have found that there is not 100% compatibility with print drivers as
there is with XP. Before you commit yourself to a Vista PC, you
may want to ask yourself these few questions:
- Is there anything I need to do with my PC
that I cannot accomplish with XP?
- Will my current printer work with Vista,
or will I need to purchase a new one?
- Is the software I use at work/home
compatible with Vista?
- If not, does this software have a Vista
compatible version?
I am not against
Vista. I was one of the millions of people excited to see how
Microsoft™ was going to top
XP. However, most, if not all, new PC's are "Vista
compatible". Which means they will run XP, and give you the
option to upgrade to Vista when you choose to do so. As much as
you may like XP now, remember that it is currently at Service Pack 2,
and Microsoft™ is still releasing updates for it to this day.
My point is that it will take some time for Vista to work as
seamlessly as XP does now. Over time, Vista will grow to be the user-friendly, productive OS that
we have seen XP grow to be, but for now, my recommendation is still
XP. If you are curious about pricing on any Vista or XP machine,

Broadband for your home PC
Cable
or DSL? That is something I hear quite often. There are a
few things to consider when making this specific choice.
-
How fast do I
need my Internet to be? Cable is usually the faster of
the 2, so if you need the bandwidth for downloading music (we do
not recommend downloading free music at all, regardless of
Internet type), to watch streaming video, or work remotely from
home, then maybe cable is the better choice. If you are simply
using it for Internet, then DSL is probably your better
choice. Let's face it, a web page will only open so fast.
-
If I am
connecting to work from home, what kind of Internet do I have at
work? To some people, this may seem like a dumb
question. I have found that there is some sort of
compatibility issues between certain DSL companies, and certain
cable companies. This incompatibility problem prevents VPN
connectivity.
-
Will I have to
sign a contract? Many high speed ISP's will let you go
month-to-month nowadays. This may be the better
option. It will give you a chance to weigh your options a
bit. However, you may have to purchase a high speed modem,
so be careful in what you're signing for.

Spyware.
The leading threat to consumer PC's
Spyware
is computer software that collects personal information about users
without their informed consent. The term Spyware, which was coined in
1995 but wasn't widely used for another five years, is often used
interchangeably with adware and malware (software designed to
infiltrate and damage a computer respectively).
Personal information is secretly recorded
with a variety of techniques, including logging keystrokes, recording
Internet web browsing history, and scanning documents on the
computer's hard disk. Purposes range from overtly criminal (theft of
passwords and financial details) to the merely annoying (recording
Internet search history for targeted advertising, while consuming
computer resources). Spyware may collect different types of
information. Some variants attempt to track the websites a user visits
and then send this information to an advertising agency. More
malicious variants attempt to intercept passwords or credit card
numbers as a user enters them into a web form or other applications.
The spread of spyware has led to the
development of an entire anti-spyware industry. Its products remove or
disable existing spyware on the computers they are installed on and
prevent its installation. However, a number of companies have
incorporated forms of spyware into their products. These programs are
not considered malware, but are still spyware as they watch and
observe for advertising purposes. It is debatable whether such
'legitimate' uses of adware/spyware are malware since the user often
has no knowledge of these 'legitimate' programs being installed on
his/her computer and is generally unaware that these programs are
infringing on his/her privacy. In any case, these programs still use
the resources of the host computer without permission.
